Summary
Tolkien tells of Arthur's expedition overseas into distant heathen lands, Guinevere's flight from Camelot, the great sea battle on Arthur's return to Britain, the traitor Mordred and the tormented doubts of Lancelot in his French castle. Though the poem was abandoned by Tolkien while still unfinished, his son Christoper here presents the text of the poem along with manuscript pages that reveal a great quantity of drafting and experimentation in verse. The evolution of the poem's structure is revealed together with narrative synopses and significant, tantalizing notes that reference associations of the Arthurian conclusion with The Silmarillion and plans for the bitter ending of the love of Lancelot and Guinevere which was never written.
Summary
Presents the legend of King Arthur in an epic, but unfinished, poem written in Old English alliterative meter
